Ridgid 74978 Description
The RIDGID K9-12 is the most compact version of the FlexShaft® Drain Cleaning Machines. The fully enclosed housing contains 30' of FlexShaft cable, encapsulated in nylon sheath for less mess and easy cleanup. The lightweight, portable design is perfect for 1 1/4" - 2" pipes. FlexShaft cable is spun by attaching your cordless drill to the input shaft on the housing. As the cable spins, the chain knocker attached will expand to provide wall-to-wall pipe cleaning. Fast setup and cleanup, quick cleaning, and cordless convenience allow you to restore your pipes to full flow capacity as efficiently as possible.

Money maker
Hands down my biggest money maker. This unit has replaced all my small pistol grip style machines. I lead off on every call with this guy 9/10 it opens the line. If it doesn’t I get out my k60

It works great..know that you can adjust the chain..and the more speed you apply to it..the better it "ll work .

Easily Best grease waterless grease cutting action
Love this thing have five!!! Great for wall to wall grease and debris clearing for baths and kitchens!!!

Good design, poor execution
The snake worked well to clear a stubborn clog in my neighbors kitchen drain. The smooth cable was easy enough to feed into the drain and it was very easy to keep clean.
The downsides: The cable came tangled so I had to pull the whole thing out and rewind it. This could have made a huge mess in a clients house. Second, all but one of the set screws holding the chain came loose and fell into the drain. Very disappointing, I had to go out and find new set screws to finish the job, glad I didnt lose the whole chain. Also disappointed that it only came with one set of chains. From Rigid, I expect the best but they did not come through for me this time. Was also expensive.

Awkward to use
I had high hopes. But wasn't impressed. It's awkward to use in close quarters, specifically using one hand to operate a drill and the other handling the cable. Especially on a bad clog. Also check the set screws before first use. They were loose from factory. It did not clear the first clog we were on.. Used a different machine with a drop head. Was in a commercial building, 1½" cast iron line. YMMV

RIDGID K9-12: Good For Light Tasks
I’ve been using the RIDGID FlexShaft K9-12 in the field for over a year, and while it’s useful for certain situations, it’s not ideal for daily service and repair work. This tool works well for homeowners or those tackling smaller tasks, as it’s lightweight and easy to operate. However, I’ve found that it lacks the power needed to clear stubborn blockages or handle the demanding situations I often face as a professional plumber.
For professionals, I would recommend the RIDGID K9-102 instead. I’ve used the K9-102 extensively and have never had any issues with it. It offers the reliability and power required for tougher jobs, making it a better choice for daily use in the field.
Overall, the K9-12 has its place, but it’s better suited for light-duty work than professional-level challenges.

Cool idea, poor quality
Bought thru Home Depot with hopes the tool would help clear 1.5-2” pipes (rather than just boring a hole through the grease). Pretty user friendly, good size, nice that it’s powered by drill of your choice, easy to clean and store. I got 2 uses out of the first one I bought before the internal gears failed. Home Depot exchanged it as faulty. 2nd one linked the cable under little resistance and therefore no longer worked. Home Depot replaced again. That time is failed mid job. I pulled off the job and exchanged for the third time (thanks Home Depot). I was able to clear the drain but when I pulled the cable out the chain head was missing so it’s now useless. I only continued to use this product because hd wouldn’t offer me money back, only product replacement. Neat idea but very low quality from an otherwise good brand.
